Graduates are prepared for employment as bookkeepers, tax return preparation assistants, accounting paraprofessionals, accounting assistants, and computer accounting assistants in home-based or other self-employment, public accounting, industry, and government. If you are currently employed, the degree offers the opportunity for job upgrading.

This program provides a mixture of basic communications and mathematics skills, technical accounting and computer skills, and basic business skills necessary to succeed in today’s business world. The program also provides the technical skills necessary for students who choose to pursue the testing required to earn either (1) the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) designation Certified Bookkeeper; or (2) the Internal Revenue Service designation Enrolled Agent (which confers the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. Learn more about enrolled agents in Treasury Department Circular 230, available on the IRS website).

Students must demonstrate college-level proficiency in composition, reading, and mathematics as prerequisites for courses within this program. Your skills in these areas may affect the sequence of courses in which you can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete this program. For more details, see the Academic Placement and Testing  section.

Graduates of the program will receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree, Bookkeeper. The Bookkeeper degree is offered at the following CMC locations: Aspen, Carbondale, Edwards, Glenwood Springs, Glenwood Springs- Spring Valley, and Steamboat Springs. See also the Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Bookkeeping

The following courses fulfill the requirements for the AAS Bookkeeper degree; many of these courses also comprise the Accounting: Bookkeeper Certificate  program. A limited number of these courses provide guaranteed transfer within Colorado so if you wish to transfer, consider the Associate of Arts: Business   degree. Many of the courses also comprise the lower-division requirements of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration . Please work with your advisor to determine the course of study which best meets your goals.

NOTE: Students who intend to qualify to take the CPA exam and become credentialed should not register for ACC courses in this program. Please see the Bachelor of Science- Business Administration degree, Accounting Emphasis .
