Picture of students working towards their Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certificate at CMC.The Colorado Health Department requires specific training for those who work as emergency medical technicians in emergency situations. This program covers those requirements and prepares students for the National Registry examination. Students are required to submit the proper paperwork for a background check prior to enrolling in EMS/EMT Basic. Students are responsible for all associated costs, some of which are: CBI background check, National Registry Exam, and Colorado Certification. Additional requirements may apply at individual clinical sites.

The EMT program may be taken in conjunction with other course work or independently. However, because of the limited course requirements, it is not appropriate as a sole course of study for full-time students. Students must earn a “B” or better in the three EMT Basic courses (EMS 145  , EMS 146  and EMS 170 ) to receive a Colorado Mountain College Certificate of Occupational Proficiency.

Students must be 18 years old before the first day of the course in order to participate. Please note: the curriculum is subject to change based on new National Scope of Practice.

Students must demonstrate college-level proficiency in reading as a pre-requisite for courses within this certificate. Skills in these areas may affect the sequence of courses in which students can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete this program. For details see the Academic Placement and Testing  section.

Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Emergency Medical Services.

The EMT-Basic certificate is offered at all campuses. CMC also offers certificates in EMT-Intermediate , EMT-Paramedic , and Wilderness Emergency Medical Services  as well as an Associate of Applied Science degree in EMT Paramedic .
