Dental Hygiene (AAS)

The Dental Hygiene program prepares individuals to clean teeth and apply preventative materials, provide oral health education and treatment counseling to patients, identify oral pathology and injuries, and manage dental hygiene practices. This program includes instruction in dental anatomy, microbiology, and pathology; dental hygiene theory and techniques; cleaning equipment operation and maintenance; dental materials; radiology; patient education and counseling; office management; supervised clinical training; and professional standards.

This program is academically challenging; therefore, students must fulfill preliminary requirements before enrolling in the dental hygiene courses. This program also has admission requirements in addition to those of the college. Please contact an admissions staff member or advisor for more details. 

Graduates of the program will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene.

This program is available at Colorado Mountain College in Vail Valley at Edwards.

Program Prerequisites


The Dental Hygiene Program general admission requirements must be completed prior to starting the Dental Hygiene Program classes in the summer. A grade of “C” or higher (not C-) is required in general education and dental hygiene courses.

  • Anatomy and Physiology I (min 4 credits, e.g. BIO 2101 , at CMC BIO 1111  is a pre/corequisite)
  • Anatomy and Physiology II (min 4 credits, e.g. BIO 2102 )
  • Microbiology (min 5 credits, e.g. BIO 2104 )
  • Nutrition (min 3 credits, e.g. HWE 1050 )
  • English Composition (min 3 credits, e.g. ENG 1021 )
  • Communication (min 3 credits, e.g. COM 1150  or COM 1250 )
  • Sociology (min 3 credits, e.g. SOC 1001  or higher)
  • Psychology (min 3 credits, e.g. PSY 1001  or higher)
  • Chemistry (min 3 credits, e.g. CHE 1011 , CHE 1009 or higher)
