Ropeway Mechanical Maintenance Technician: Level I


This certificate provides students an opportunity to gain the foundational skills and knowledge to work for North American ski resorts as a Level 1 Lift Mechanic as defined by the National Ski Area Association Lift Maintenance Training Resource Guide. Courses will be taught in combination with partner ski resorts, utilizing hands-on learning techniques. 

Students must demonstrate acceptable proficiency levels in composition, reading, and mathematics as prerequisites for courses within this certificate. Proficiency may affect the sequence of classes in which students can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete this program.

Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Ropeway Mechanical Maintenance Technician: Level 1.

This certificate is currently offered in-person in an intensive format during the summer months. The program is offered in partnership with Colorado ski resorts and is available at the Leadville, Steamboat, and Breckenridge campuses. Please contact a campus counselor or academic advisor at the preferred campus for more information.

This certificate program is not eligible for federal student aid funds.

Ropeway Electrical Maintenance Technician


To participate in this program you must be: a) a registered apprentice working in an appropriate position for a company which has an approved lift mechanical or electrical apprenticeship program (both the business sponsor and the apprentice will be registered with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Training program); OR b) be an employee of a lift maintenance/electrical department with the approval of your supervisor.

Colorado Mountain College, Vail Resorts, Inc., the Rocky Mountain Lift Association, and Aspen Skiing Company have cooperated to increase the level of training available to those wishing to pursue a career as a ropeway maintenance technician. The certificate is currently offered in two disciplines, Ropeway Mechanical Maintenance Technician and Ropeway Electrical Maintenance Technician.

Students must demonstrate acceptable proficiency levels in composition, reading, and mathematics as prerequisites for courses within this certificate. Proficiency may affect the sequence of classes in which students can enroll and may also extend the time required to complete this program. The Ropeway Maintenance Technician program is administered by Ski Area Operations (SAO) at Colorado Mountain College in Leadville; please contact them at 719-486-4228 for information. The program course offerings are delivered at the Leadville campus and online; some of the courses will only be available at the Leadville campus and others will only be available online. Please contact the SAO program faculty who assist the students in the development of individual schedules. 

Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency in Ropeway Electrical Maintenance Technician.

CMC also offers certificates in Ski Patrol Operations  and Slopes and Trails Maintenance  as well as an Associate of Applied Science degree in Ski Area Operations

For federal student aid purposes, this program is defined as 34 credits hours and 30 weeks of instruction and is financial aid eligible.
